History & Origin

The Irish Flag shot replicates the Irish tricolor — one of Europe's most symbolically specific national flags — in liquid form through layered spirits of contrasting densities and colors. The Irish national flag was first presented as a symbol of Irish independence on March 7, 1848, in Waterford by Thomas Francis Meagher, who had received the tricolor as a gift from a group of French women sympathetic to the Irish cause during the French Second Republic period. The flag's three vertical stripes carry specific meaning: green represents the Catholic and Gaelic Irish tradition rooted in centuries of resistance to British rule; orange represents the Protestant and Unionist tradition following William of Orange, the Dutch-born king whose 1690 victory at the Battle of the Boyne over the Catholic James II is still commemorated annually; white represents the aspiration for lasting peace between the two communities. The tricolor became the official flag of the Irish Free State following the 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty and is enshrined in Article 7 of the Constitution of Ireland (1937). The shot's layered construction uses green crème de menthe at the base, Irish cream liqueur (white) in the middle, and Grand Marnier or peach schnapps (orange) on top, the different densities of each ingredient maintaining visual separation.
