History & Origin

The NA Manhattan is a non-alcoholic adaptation of one of New York City's most historically significant cocktails, documented from the early 1880s and among the oldest stirred whiskey drinks in the American canon. The Manhattan's formula — whiskey, sweet vermouth, and Angostura bitters — has been reproduced in the non-alcoholic category as quality NA whiskey alternatives have improved substantially through the 2010s and 2020s. The original Manhattan was documented in O.H. Byron's The Modern Bartender's Guide (1884) and Harry Johnson's Bartenders' Manual (1882), with multiple competing origin stories placing its creation at the Manhattan Club in New York and attributing it to various bartenders of the 1870s-1880s period. The NA version faces specific challenges: whiskey's barrel-derived complexity — the vanilla, caramel, and spice that come from aging in new charred oak — is difficult to replicate through botanical infusion alone, and sweet vermouth's wine base has no direct non-alcoholic equivalent. Brands including Lyre's (Australian, founded 2019), Ritual Zero Proof (American, founded 2019), and Spiritless (American, founded 2020) have each developed NA whiskey alternatives formulated specifically for cocktail applications. Non-alcoholic sweet vermouth replacements and enhanced aromatic bitters complete the recipe, producing a Manhattan that delivers the format's herbal-and-spirit complexity without alcohol.
