History & Origin

Purple Passion Punch draws on the American tradition of grape-based punch that stretches from colonial-era wassail bowls through the Welch's Grape Juice era of the early 20th century. Thomas Bramwell Welch, a New Jersey dentist and temperance advocate, developed pasteurized unfermented grape juice in 1869 using Concord grapes — a variety developed by Ephraim Wales Bull in Concord, Massachusetts in 1849 — to provide a non-alcoholic communion wine alternative. Welch's product became a household staple after its commercial expansion in the early 20th century, and Concord grape's distinctive flavor profile — intensely fruity, slightly musky, sweeter and more pungent than European wine grapes — became the dominant American grape flavor reference for most of the 20th century. The purple color that both Concord grape juice and purple-themed punches share carries strong cultural associations with abundance, celebration, and festivity rooted in millennia of symbolism: purple was the most expensive dye in the ancient world, extracted from Murex sea snails by Phoenician traders on the coast of modern-day Lebanon, and reserved for royalty and religious ceremony in cultures from the Roman Empire to the Byzantine court to the Catholic Church. In cocktail culture, that association with luxury and festivity transfers directly to a purple punch bowl, which signals celebration through color alone before a single sip is taken.
