S'mores have been an American campfire tradition since at least 1927, when the first documented recipe appeared under the name Some Mores in a Girl Scouts publication called Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts. The combination of toasted marshmallow and a piece of chocolate sandwiched between two graham crackers — graham crackers themselves invented by Sylvester Graham in the 1820s as a health food based on his dietary reform theories — creates a specific sensory experience that is simultaneously crunchy, gooey, chocolatey, and smoky, the brief caramelization of the marshmallow's outer sugar layer producing a toasted depth that none of the individual components delivers alone. The recipe spread from camp culture into mainstream American food tradition through the mid-20th century, supported by the marshmallow industry's promotional efforts and the dessert's association with outdoor leisure, summer camps, and family bonding. The pudding shot translates these three distinct elements into liquid form through deliberate ingredient selection: chocolate instant pudding for the chocolate bar component, marshmallow-flavored vodka — a flavored spirit introduced in the 2010s following the success of cake-flavored and whipped cream vodkas — for the toasted marshmallow character, and crushed graham crackers as a garnish that provides both authentic crunch and the unmistakable whole-grain sweetness that distinguishes graham crackers from plain cookie crumbs. The result is a dessert shot that functions as both a cocktail and a flavor memory.
