The Tuxedo No. 2 was published by Harry Craddock in The Savoy Cocktail Book in 1930, one of the defining bar guides of the 20th century. The Tuxedo family of cocktails takes its name from the Tuxedo Club, a private members club founded in 1886 near Tuxedo Park, New York, widely credited with popularizing the tuxedo jacket in American society. The No. 2 designation distinguishes it from the simpler Tuxedo No. 1 (gin, vermouth, absinthe, lemon peel). The No. 2 adds maraschino liqueur and orange bitters to the gin and dry vermouth base, producing a deeper, more aromatic cocktail. A single dash of absinthe provides a haunting anise note without dominating. Craddock was a celebrity figure whose recipes became international standards, and the Tuxedo No. 2 has remained a benchmark of the stirred gin cocktail canon.
