The Xanthia is an equal-parts pre-war cocktail combining gin, yellow Chartreuse, and cherry brandy in a formula published in Harry Craddock's The Savoy Cocktail Book (1930). The name derives from xanthos — the ancient Greek adjective meaning yellow or blonde — directly referencing the golden color of the yellow Chartreuse at the drink's center. Chartreuse itself comes in two expressions: green, bottled at 55% ABV and made from all 130 botanical ingredients in the formula received by the Carthusian monks of the Grande Chartreuse monastery in 1605; and yellow, bottled at 40% ABV from a subset of those botanicals, sweeter and more honeyed than the green, with warm saffron and herbal notes dominant. The yellow expression's lower intensity and sweeter profile makes it more approachable in cocktail applications than the assertive green, pairing with gin's juniper freshness and cherry brandy's stone-fruit sweetness in the Xanthia without any single element dominating. Cherry brandy — the fruit liqueur made from macerated cherries in spirit, most prominently produced by Peter Heering in Denmark since 1818 — contributes a concentrated cherry-and-almond complexity alongside the Chartreuse's herbal depth. Craddock's inclusion of the Xanthia in the Savoy Cocktail Book preserved a recipe that demonstrates how three strongly flavored ingredients in equal parts can produce harmony through complementary aromatic chemistry.
