History & Origin

The Brainstorm is a whiskey cocktail combining Irish whiskey, dry vermouth, and Bénédictine that first appeared in Hugo Ensslin's Recipes for Mixed Drinks — published in two editions in 1916 and 1917, with Ensslin serving as head bartender at Hotel Wallick on West 43rd Street in New York City. The same volume that first documented the Aviation cocktail also preserved the Brainstorm, and Harry Craddock subsequently included it in The Savoy Cocktail Book (1930). Ensslin's books are significant as the last professional bartending guides published before Prohibition took effect in January 1920, documenting a bar culture about to be extinguished. The Brainstorm's three ingredients — Irish whiskey, dry vermouth, and Bénédictine — produce an understated, spirit-forward drink of considerable elegance: the whiskey's grain smoothness, the vermouth's herbal dry astringency, and the Bénédictine's 27-botanical warm sweetness create a preparation that is complex without being fussy. The cocktail languished in near-obscurity for decades before bartender Al Sotack championed it at Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co, the Philadelphia cocktail bar that opened in 2010, introducing it to a new generation of craft bartenders and demonstrating that pre-Prohibition obscurities could achieve contemporary relevance.
