📜 History
The Coronation Cocktail was created by Joseph Rose of Murray Brothers Cafe in Newark, New Jersey, where it took second prize at the Police Gazette Bartenders' Contest in 1903, one of the most prominent cocktail competitions of the early 20th century. The drink was subsequently published in the Hoffman House Bartender's Guide in 1905 and achieved lasting fame when Harry Craddock included it in The Savoy Cocktail Book in 1930. Its name was inspired by the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902. The combination of fino sherry, dry vermouth, maraschino, and orange bitters produces a crisp, aperitif-style cocktail that anticipates the low-ABV cocktail movement by over a century.
