The Cranberry Mule is a seasonal adaptation of the Moscow Mule, one of the most influential cocktails in the history of American drinking. The Moscow Mule was created in 1941 in Hollywood, California through a commercial partnership between John G. Martin of the Heublein spirits company, who had recently purchased the American distribution rights to Smirnoff vodka, and Jack Morgan, the owner of the Cock 'n' Bull bar on Sunset Strip who was struggling to sell his house-brand ginger beer. The pairing of Smirnoff vodka, Morgan's ginger beer, and lime juice served in a copper mug — the mug itself designed as a promotional item — produced one of the first deliberate cocktail marketing campaigns in American history and helped establish vodka as a mainstream American spirit. Cranberry juice entered the American food consciousness as a holiday staple through the annual Thanksgiving tradition of cranberry sauce and the Ocean Spray cooperative's agricultural marketing from the 1930s onward, and its tart ruby color and seasonal associations made it a natural Mule variation for the autumn and winter months. Adding cranberry juice to the Mule's ginger-lime base produces a drink whose tartness and color reinforce each other: the cranberry's acidity echoes the lime, the ginger's heat complements the berry's slight bitterness, and the deep red hue signals celebration in a way that the plain Mule's pale gold cannot. The rosemary garnish — whose piney, resinous aroma bridges winter herbs and cocktail aromatics — became a standard decorative and aromatic element of holiday cocktail presentations from the early 2000s onward.
