History & Origin

El Presidente was created in Havana in the 1910s and is named for Mario García Menocal, who served as President of Cuba from 1913 to 1921. García Menocal, a former general in Cuba's war of independence against Spain, was the island's third president and presided over a period of significant economic expansion driven by sugar prices inflated by World War I. The cocktail — combining Cuban white rum with dry vermouth, orange curaçao, and grenadine — was documented in multiple Havana bartending guides published in the 1910s and 1920s, a period when Havana's bar culture was producing some of the most sophisticated rum cocktails in the world. Havana became a destination for American drinkers during Prohibition (1920–1933), when the short boat crossing from Key West to the Cuban capital brought tens of thousands of Americans annually to legal cocktail bars, and the El Presidente was among the Cuban classics they encountered. The drink's structure — spirit, dry vermouth, orange liqueur, and grenadine — applies the vermouth cocktail framework of the pre-Prohibition era to Cuban rum, acknowledging the influence of European aperitivo culture on Havana's cosmopolitan bar scene. A key aesthetic choice is the proportion of grenadine, which should be small enough to tint rather than sweeten, preserving the drink's dry, spirit-forward character.
