Harvey Wallbanger was created in the 1950s, with the most consistent account crediting bartender Donato "Duke" Antone of the Blackwatch Bar in Hollywood, California. The drink became an American cocktail phenomenon in the 1970s after the Galliano liqueur company launched an aggressive marketing campaign featuring the fictional character Harvey Wallbanger — a surfer named Harvey who, after losing a surfing competition, consoled himself with Screwdrivers enhanced with Galliano, and subsequently walked into walls. Galliano, the tall Italian herbal liqueur with vanilla and anise notes produced in the Piedmont region since 1896, was an obscure import before the marketing campaign transformed it into a bar staple through Harvey Wallbanger's fame. The drink is essentially a Screwdriver — vodka and orange juice — with a Galliano float added on top.
