History & Origin

The Rising Sun cocktail takes its name from Japan's most enduring symbol — the Hinomaru, the circle of the rising sun depicted on Japan's national flag, and the country's traditional designation as Nihon or Nippon, meaning the origin of the sun. The name has been associated with Japan since at least the 7th century CE, when Emperor Taizong of Tang Dynasty China is recorded receiving a letter from the Japanese court that began: from the sovereign of the land of the rising sun. The layered visual presentation of the drink — orange juice on a base of sake, with grenadine sinking to form a sunrise gradient — mimics the warm spectrum of a dawn sky, the deep red of the grenadine at the bottom representing the sun just below the horizon and the orange above it the sky's glow. The cocktail structure mirrors the Tequila Sunrise, the 1970s California classic that popularized the sunrise-in-a-glass visual as a cocktail technique: a juice-based long drink with a dense syrup allowed to settle at the bottom of the glass before being left to bleed upward. Sake, at roughly 14-16% ABV, makes the Rising Sun a lighter and more restrained drink than tequila-based versions — the rice wine's delicate floral character and mild umami providing a softer backdrop for the citrus and grenadine than a higher-proof spirit would. The combination serves as an accessible introduction to sake in a cocktail context for drinkers unfamiliar with the ingredient.
