Sex on the Beach was created in 1987 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, by Ted Pizio, a bartender who developed the drink during a promotional contest organized by DeKuyper to drive sales of their newly launched Peachtree Schnapps. Fort Lauderdale was a major spring break destination, and the deliberately provocative name was chosen to appeal to the young, beach-going crowd that filled the city's bars each March. The combination of peach schnapps, vodka, orange juice, and cranberry juice or grenadine produced a vivid, tropical-tasting drink that proved universally appealing. By the early 1990s, Sex on the Beach had spread to bars nationwide and became one of the most consistently ordered cocktails of the decade, alongside the Cosmopolitan and the Long Island Iced Tea. Its straightforward, fruit-forward sweetness made it a reliable gateway cocktail for new drinkers.
