History & Origin

The Vermont Mule is a regional variation of the Moscow Mule — created in Hollywood in 1941 by John G. Martin and Jack Morgan — that substitutes maple syrup for the simple syrup or sugar that sometimes accompanies the original, celebrating Vermont's status as the largest maple syrup producer in the United States. Vermont's maple syrup industry dates to colonial times, when European settlers learned maple sap harvesting from Indigenous peoples, and the state now produces approximately 40-50% of all US maple syrup annually. The addition of maple syrup to the vodka-ginger-lime formula adds an earthy, caramelized sweetness that softens the ginger's sharpness while contributing a distinctly regional character that differentiates the Vermont Mule from its more neutral-flavored parent cocktail.
