White Russian
Vodka, Kahlúa, and heavy cream — the Black Russian with cream added, its cultural status transformed by The Big Lebowski (1998), The Dude's defining drink.

The White Russian evolved from the Black Russian — created in Brussels in 1949 by Gustave Tops for US Ambassador Perle Mesta — through the addition of heavy cream or milk, transforming a stark two-ingredient drink into a rich dessert cocktail. The cream version appeared in cocktail guides throughout the 1960s and 1970s, popular as an after-dinner drink in hotel bars. The White Russian's cultural status was transformed in 1998 by the Coen Brothers cult film The Big Lebowski, in which Jeff Bridges' character Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski consumes White Russians throughout the film as his defining character trait — an emblem of his laid-back, anti-ambition philosophy. The Dude's devotion to the drink created one of cinema's most iconic cocktail pairings, and annual Lebowski Fest celebrations worldwide still treat the White Russian as the obligatory tribute.
