π History
The Up-To-Date was published in Hugo Ensslin's Recipes for Mixed Drinks in 1916, making it one of the last major pre-Prohibition American bar guides. Ensslin was the head bartender at Hotel Wallick in Times Square, New York City, and his book was notable for being among the first to include recipes using absinthe and other then-controversial ingredients. The Up-To-Date is essentially a Manhattan variant that substitutes amontillado sherry for the sweet vermouth, with Grand Marnier adding a whisper of orange and bitters providing structural backbone. The drink fell out of circulation during Prohibition and was rediscovered by cocktail historians in the early 21st century.
